The Orchard
Talga Estate is home to the Hunter Valley's only pomegranate orchard - a working orchard tucked behind the villas on our 25-acre property in Lovedale. Each autumn, the trees bear heavy with deep crimson fruit, their jewel-red arils a striking contrast to the vineyard-dotted valley landscape surrounding them.
Pomegranates have been cultivated for over 4,000 years, prized across Persian, Greek, and Mediterranean cultures as a symbol of abundance and renewal. At Talga, we grow ours naturally in the Hunter Valley soil, harvesting each season by hand.
When is pomegranate season in Australia?
Pomegranate season in Australia runs from around February to May, with most fruit picked in March and April. Here in the Hunter Valley our harvest runs from late March to
May, and the fruit is at its best in April. Outside those months, the pomegranates in Australian supermarkets are almost always imported from the Northern Hemisphere, mostly
California, where the season runs September to February. If you're eating one in spring, it has travelled a long way. If you're eating one in autumn, it may well have come
from a farm like ours.
Pomegranate Molasses
We make our own pomegranate molasses on-site - a deeply flavoured syrup produced by slowly reducing fresh-pressed juice until rich, dark, and glossy. A staple of
Persian and Middle Eastern kitchens, it's extraordinary in marinades for lamb or duck, drizzled over a cheese board, stirred into a cocktail, or spooned over vanilla
ice cream.

Pick your own pomegranates in the Hunter Valley
Each autumn we open the orchard for pick-your-own harvest weekends. Wander the rows, choose your fruit straight from the tree and take it home. As the Hunter Valley's only
pomegranate orchard, it's the only place in the valley you can do it, and we're about two hours' drive from Sydney. Dates are set once the fruit is ready, usually from late
March, and announced on our Facebook page and Instagram. Pick-your-own returns for the 2027 harvest.
From Orchard to Table
Fresh pomegranate arils are one of nature's great garnishes - glistening like rubies, bursting with a flavour that's tart, sweet, and complex all at once. They pair beautifully with goat's cheese, walnuts, dark chocolate, and a glass of local Hunter Valley red.
Whether you're picking straight from the tree or scattering them across a cheese platter on your private veranda, the pomegranate harvest is one of Talga's most distinctive seasonal experiences.
Pomegranate questions we're often asked
Is it pomegranate season in Australia right now?
If it's autumn, yes. Australian pomegranates are picked from around February to May. From June to August the local fruit is mostly finished, and from September to January
anything on the shelf has been imported.
Are pomegranates in season all year round?
No. Pomegranates are a genuinely seasonal fruit with a short local window. Supermarkets stock them for most of the year by importing from the United States between September
and February, and more recently from India, which makes them look like a year-round fruit. Australian-grown pomegranates are only available in autumn.
Where are pomegranates grown in Australia?
Australia's commercial pomegranate industry is small and concentrated in the dry inland regions: the Riverland and Northern Mallee in South Australia, Sunraysia and the
Goulburn Valley in Victoria, with smaller plantings in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. Talga Estate is the valley's only pomegranate orchard.
Can I pick my own pomegranates in NSW?
Yes. Talga Estate in Lovedale, in the Hunter Valley, opens the orchard for pick-your-own weekends during the autumn harvest, from late March to May. It's about two hours from
Sydney and dates are announced each season on our Facebook page and Instagram.
